Because of his efforts helping the victims of Hurricane Harvey earlier this year, George Strait is 2018’s Texan of the Year. He was able to raise $50 million to help with recovery and repair efforts, so this award is warranted.
According to ABC, Texas State Representative Doug Miller, who serves as the Texas Legislative Conference chair, says the award is more than justified.
“No one has done more than George Strait to raise awareness and funds for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts,” Miller said. He put his well-earned reputation on the line and asked not only his fellow Texans to step up, but all Americans. Moreover, they have.”
A special conference will take place in New Braunfels to award Strait with the prize. This is an annual award, so several other Texans have preceded Strait. Some of the past winners include Ray Benson, both President Bushes and Lady Bird Johnson. Strait is only the second musician to win the award.
Strait did a lot to raise money for Hurricane relief efforts. For starters, he used his social media pages to draw attention to the crisis and to encourage others to donate to the cause. He also organized several performances and concerts both live and on television to gather funds for the relief efforts.
