John Oliver is the king of trolling right-wing agendas and on the latest episode of his TV show Last Week Tonight, Oliver took a jab at Vice President Mike Pence.
Typically, Oliver focuses the beginning of his show on President Trump’s latest irresponsible move, but he shifted the narrative on Pence. Specifically, how America would be worse off with Pence as president rather than Trump. Trump has been firing most of his staff within his first year in office, but Pence is the only member who cannot be fired, and that should be scary to everyone.
Oliver noted former White House staffer Omarosa Manigault’s comments on Pence during her stint on reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother. She warned the other cast members and said, “we would be begging for the days of Trump back if [Mike Pence] became president,” citing his extremist religious views and anti-gay rights agenda.
During the segment, Oliver summarized Pence’s political career and extremist views that he now claims to deny (big surprise there). In the nineties Pence hosted his own radio show, where he would often spread the message that women are not welcome in the military. During his time representing Indiana as a member of Congress in the House of Representatives, he was steadfast on his belief of keeping marriage sacred and often worked with a group called Focus on the Family that advocated for gay conversion therapy.
In fact, despite his denial claims to support conversion therapy, Pence spoke at a Focus on the Family event in 2017, and even went so far as to say the founder James Dobson was his mentor. Oliver cracked a joke at this and said, “Saying you don’t support conversion therapy and then calling Dobson your ‘mentor’ is like saying you’re a staunch vegetarian and a law-abiding citizen – and by the way, please meet my lifelong friend and mentor the Hamburgler.”
Despite everything Oliver and Pence don’t have in common, he did find one thing he liked about the vice president: his bunny Marlon Bundo. “It kills me to say this, but [that’s] objectively a good name for a bunny,” he said. Marlon Bundo has his own book out called A Day in the Life of the Vice President.
In classic Last Week Tonight style, Oliver took a serious project from a right-wing politician and turned it into something else: a more progressive version of the book called A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo. But unlike Pence’s bunny, Oliver’s bunny is gay and falls in love with another bunny.
A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo is a real book that’s for sale on Amazon. It’s also available as an audiobook and features narrations from people like Jim Parsons, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ellie Kemper, and RuPaul. All proceeds from book sales go to the Trevor Project, a group that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth, and AIDS United, which works to end AIDS in the United States.
And with one last jab, the book is available at Better Bundo Book. Suck it, Pence.
